Murphy – who spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday – has been linked with a number of clubs, including Rangers and Middlesbrough, this summer.

However, the winger – who won and converted a penalty in Saturday’s 2-1 friendly win over Barnsley – is focused on impressing head coach Steve Bruce.

Murphy, buoyed by a strong campaign at Hillsborough, is determined to finally establish himself at St James’s Park.

"I want to show everybody what I'm about,” said the 25-year-old, a boyhood United fan. "Last season was an amazing season for me. I really got into my rhythm and gained confidence, and I think I have shown that again here (against Barnsley).

“So far in pre-season, I’m showing what I’m about. For me, it’s about putting in good performances just to give the manager a headache."

Murphy, signed from Norwich City in the summer of 2017 in a £10million deal, impressed when he was given a run of games in his first season at Newcastle.

And the former England Under-21 international hopes to get a run under Bruce.

"I’m pleased with how things are going this pre-season, and hopefully I can keep putting in good performances on the pitch," Murphy told NUFC TV. "I want to keep the confidence high and keep on putting in the performances. I’ve been working hard on my confidence.

"It (my confidence) has grown a lot, and I think I have shown that in my performances. I do well when I get a run of games under my belt, like I did at Sheffield Wednesday."

Bruce has lost Inter Milan’s Valentino Lazaro, who spent the second half of last season on loan at St James’s Park, and he’s in no hurry to make a decision on Murphy’s future.

“He’s probably thinking he’s not had a fair crack of the whip, and certainly I haven’t seen a great deal of him,” said Bruce.

“Certainly, he had a really good spell at Sheffield Wednesday. He did very, very well, so I’m just going to take my time with him and have a look and see what the next step is for him.”
