The Saints manager watched on as his side, down to 10 men, were beaten by a late Allan Saint-Maximin strike at St Mary’s yesterday.

And the Austrian, a countryman of Valentino Lazaro, has praised the business done by United in the winter window, as well as finding some kind words for opposite number Steve Bruce.

Hasenhuttl said: “Steve made some intelligent signings in January who have already made a positive impact.”

On Bruce, he continued: “A very successful man who achieved great things as a player and has gained huge experience as a manager at the very highest level.

“To take charge of more than 400 games in the Premier League is extremely rare and does not happen by accident - it is reward for success and incredible consistency in his work.”
