Newcastle United's Jeff Hendrick caught up coronvirus scare on Republic of Ireland duty

Browne tested positive for Covid-19 after playing 90 minutes against England alongside Newcastle United midfielder Hendrick last night.

However, Hendrick and his team-mates, beaten 3-0 at Wembley, will NOT have to self-isolate for 14 days as they are not classed as "close contacts” of midfielder Browne, who is asymptomatic.

A statement from the Football Association of Ireland read: “The Football Association of Ireland can confirm that one member of the senior men's international team has tested positive for Covid-19. The player has been isolated from the group as per COVID-19 protocols, and the HSE and UEFA have been informed of this development. The player is asymptomatic and feeling well.”

Hendrick, signed in the summer as a free agent, is in line to play against Wales in Cardiff on Sunday – and against Bulgaria in Dublin next Wednesday – before returning to Tyneside ahead of the home game against Chelsea on November 21.
