Newcastle United players are set to be tested for coronavirus – ahead of a return to training.

The club’s players have been staying at home since March, when the Premier League was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, clubs are preparing for a return to training next week ahead of a proposed June 12 restart date.

And Newcastle’s players have been informed of planned tests on Friday, according to the Daily Mail. The club’s medical team has been preparing for all eventualities in recent weeks ahead of a summer restart. The club is 13th in the league with nine games left to play.

Meanwhile, Danny Rose, signed on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in January, has criticised the proposed restart. The defender said: “People's lives are at risk. Football shouldn't even be spoke about coming back until the numbers (infected or dying) have dropped massively.”
