Newcastle United transfer news: Toon weigh up PL swoop for defender, Date given for potential takeover

Newcastle United have emerged as potential suitors for Sunderland loanee Dion Sanderson this summer.

That’s according to Football Insider, who suggest that the Toon Army are now keeping tabs on the 21-year-old defender.

Sanderson is currently on loan in the north east from parent club Wolves, and has spent this season in League One with Sunderland.

The youngster has impressed during his time with Lee Johnson’s side, and has featured 26 times in all competitions for the Black Cats.

His performances haven’t gone unnoticed either, with Johnson referring to him as an “absolute Rolls-Royce”, and a number of clubs said to be chasing his signature this summer.

Crystal Palace, Huddersfield Town, and Sheffield United are all understood to be in the mix, but Sanderson himself has made it clear that he is eager to fight for his place with Wolves next season.

If Wanderers do decide to cash in on the player, however, they would reportedly look for a fee of around £2 million.

Elsewhere, the same site have offered a big update on Newcastle’s protracted takeover saga.

It is suggested that Toon chiefs are now privately confident that the Saudi-backed takeover which was derailed by the Premier League last year will been green-lit.

Magpies owner Mike Ashley has taken legal action against the governing body, with both he and the club's potential buyers still committed to a deal being struck.

This fresh report suggests that the Premier League’s stance on the buyout has thawed, and that a deal could even be completed as early as June.
