'This one hurts' - Nick Woltemade issues 16-word statement after Newcastle United own goal v Sunderland

Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle United: Nick Woltemade has taken to social media to react to Sunday’s derby disappointment at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats secured Tyne-Wear derby bragging rights with Woltemade’s bizarre own goal less than a minute into the second half, proving to be the difference between the sides.

It was a game of few chances in which Newcastle limited Sunderland to just one shot on target while posing no real threat themselves.

Woltemade enjoyed a positive start to life at Newcastle following his £65million move from VfB Stuttgart in the summer, scoring seven goals at the right end of the pitch. But undoubtedly his and Newcastle’s lowest moment of the season so far saw the German head Nordi Mukiele’s cross emphatically into his own net.

The defeat sees Newcastle trail Sunderland by four points in the Premier League table after 16 games. Now they must quickly dust themselves off in an attempt to bounce back against Fulham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night.

In the meantime, Woltemade has faced the music on social media and issued a short statement via his Instagram account.

Reflecting on Woltemade’s own goal, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said: “I hope he doesn’t take it personally. These things happen in games. He went back with good intentions and he’s defended extremely well since he’s been here. It was just an unfortunate moment.”

Anthony Gordon comments on NUFC defeat

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, took to Instagram to apologise for his performance and the defeat at the Stadium of Light.

Gordon wrote: “Totally underperformed today in a game that would have meant so much to everyone.

“We can only apologise, reset and try to make it right on Wednesday.”

It’s a quick turnaround for Newcastle as they host Fulham on Wednesday (8:15pm kick-off) looking to make their third Carabao Cup semi-final in four seasons. The Magpies won the Carabao Cup last season with a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Wembley Stadium.
