Whether Steve Bruce will have the funds readily available to make the signings that he want remains to be seen, but if Joe Willock’s electric spell on Tyneside last term has taught us anything, it’s that there is real value in a well-executed loan deal.
The same could be said for bringing in free agents, and there are several high-profile names who could become available for nothing in the coming weeks.
One such talent is Crystal Palace’s Patrick Van Aanholt, and former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has identified the Dutchman as a player who could help to bolster the Magpies’ ranks.
“You have a lot of players out of contract at the moment,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“Look at Van Aanholt. I’m sure he could do a job at Newcastle. He’s someone who can add that quality and experience.
“Newcastle have to be clever in the transfer market and look at players who are out of contract.
“Maybe a two-year contract for some players, Van Aanholt would be one for me. They have to look at him.
“He played very well for Holland the other night, there are gems out there if you look for them.”
Van Aanholt made 22 appearances for Roy Hodgson’s side in the Premier League last season.
