The Swiss international suffered a knee injury in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Southampton at St James’s Park.

He had to be stretchered off with 15-minutes of normal time remaining as The Magpies were reduced to nine men having made all three substitutions in the match.

After the match, Schar tweeted an update on his condition: “Difficult to accept. I felt really good on the pitch, and the team did well the last few games. Now I will be out for a few months, and it’s gonna be a hard time. But I will try everything to be back on the pitch as soon as possible. My goal will be to be ready for the Euros.”

Callum Wilson and Javier Manquillo also suffered injuries in the game in what proved to be a costly win for Steve Bruce’s side.

@MichaelNUFC_: “That’s him played his last game for us sadly.”

@PhilipPeppiatt: “Get well soon Fabian. Hopefully there will have been a #NUFCTakeover and Rafa Benitez back as manager by the time you're fit again. Then a new contract for you at NUFC.”

@AWalshinho: “Hopefully you get a new contract but if not thanks for the memories, all the best with the recovery.”

@nathjohndavis: “Hope that wasn’t the last game you played for us as that’s no way to end a career at a club, hope you have a speedy recovery fella.”

@NUFCR2: “Will be a big miss, has been one of the in form players in defence under these latest changes and his ability to go forward with the ball will be a huge loss.”

@Rossc9210: “His own fault. Shouldn’t be taking free kicks then pulling out halving the player.”

@agbnufc_: “Whose idea was it to not put a recall option in Lejeune's contract? Amateur this lot. So we struggle on while our other best ball playing CB is chilling in Spain. Okay #NUFC.”
