Premier League chief reacts to 'unprecedented' situation after all fixtures including Newcastle's FA Cup quarter-final suspended until April 3

Premier League chiefs have described the coronavirus situation as ‘unprecedented’ and say they will aim to reschedule the suspended fixtures when ‘safe to do so’.

It has now been confirmed that no games will be played until the first weekend of April at the earliest, as coronavirus continues to spread around the UK.

All games in the Premier League, Championship, League One and Two have been suspended with the National League meeting this afternoon following the dramatic events of the past 24-hours.

Newcastle United were due to play Sheffield United at St James's Park this Saturday and Manchester City a week on Saturday in the FA Cup quarter-final before the international break. All games have been suspended.

A Premier League statement read: “Following a meeting of Shareholders today, it was unanimously decided to suspend the Premier League with the intention of returning on 4 April, subject to medical advice and conditions at the time.”

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: "Above all, we wish Mikel Arteta and Callum Hudson-Odoi speedy recoveries, and everyone else affected by COVID-19.

"In this unprecedented situation, we are working closely with our clubs, Government, The FA and EFL and can reassure everyone the health and welfare of players, staff and supporters are our priority."

The statement added: “Despite the challenges, it is the Premier League's aim to reschedule the displaced fixtures, including those played by Academy sides, when it is safe to do so.

“In this fast-moving environment, further updates will be provided when appropriate.”
