Newcastle had to submit a revised 25-man squad following the closure of the January transfer window. The club signed midfielder Joe Willock on loan from Arsenal, but the 21-year-old did not need to fill a slot in the squad due to his age, and DeAndre Yedlin’s departure for Galatasaray freed up a place.

“Christian Atsu comes back into it,” said United’s head coach. “There was only him or Saivet to choose from, so it was pretty straightforward.”

Atsu – who had been available for transfer – hasn’t played a game for United since coming off the bench in a Carabao Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers in September. The 29-year-old, like Saivet, is out of contract the end of season.
