A plan has been drawn up for a June 12 restart by the Premier League, which was suspended in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that proposal has run into early opposition.

Managers and a player representative from each club were presented with the Premier League’s proposals during two video conferences yesterday. However, The Times report that managers felt that the plan gave them too little time to prepare, while players were unhappy that they were not shown the protocols for a return to full-contact training.

Clubs will be asked to sign off on the protocols for the first stage – players returning to training in small groups – at a Premier League meeting on Monday.

Newcastle United are due to start testing their players for coronavirus ahead of a planned return to small-scale training next week.
