Having lost frontman Wesley for nine months, Aston Villa are reportedly considering a move for Gayle, who made only his second Magpies start of the season at Wolves yesterday.

According to a report in the Times, Gayle is a player on Dean Smith’s radar as he searches far and wide for a forward in the January window.

Championship clubs Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and West Bromwich Albion have all been linked with winter window moves for 29-year-old Gayle, who scored 23 goals in the second tier last season.

The sticking point in any deal is the fee Newcastle are demanding for the player.

The Magpies are thought to want a £20million obligatory buy inserted into any loan deal done for the player this month, as well as a substantial amount of his £50,000+ wages covered.
