'Proof' of Newcastle United takeover progress cited in fresh claims

Eurosport, report Get French Football News, claim that an “unnamed individual is making advances in his efforts to acquire Premier League club Newcastle United”.

Bizarrely, the decision to use a Government scheme to furlough Steve Nickson and his player recruitment team on 80% of their wages during the coronavirus pandemic is reported to be “proof” that negotiations have moved forward.

It’s claimed that the would-be buyers are looking for a new head coach – former manager Rafa Benitez is mentioned as a candidate – and a sporting director.

Newcastle, we know, is a target for Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. However, the Gazette reported last week that the two parties had not yet agreed a deal. The club was put up for sale by owner Mike Ashley in October 2017.
