Matz Sels is a January target for former club Gent, according to a report.
The goalkeeper joined Newcastle United in the summer from the Belgian club.
Sels started the season between the posts, but Karl Darlow was recalled to the starting XI in late September.
And Rafa Benitez's Championship leaders have won every game Darlow has played in goal this season.
Gent are reportedly interested in taking 24-year-old Sels back to Belgium on a half-season loan.
Benitez – who loaned No 1 Tim Krul out in the summer – has Rob Elliot back from long-term injury.
But United's manager could still be unwilling to loan out Sels in the New Year.
Sels could start Tuesday night's EFL Cup quarter-final against Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.
