Revealed! The number of Premier League votes needed to decide club's fate – and what that means for Newcastle, Liverpool, Man United & the rest

Fourteen Premier League clubs would have to be in agreement for any rule changes in the top flight to take place – including to cease or annul the current campaign.

Newcastle United, with the 19 other Premier League member clubs, are due to return to action provisionally on April 4 – but recent reports regarding the severity of the coronavirus outbreak suggest that prediction could be a little optimistic.

A number of suggestions have been hinted at, with ending the campaign early, no relegation, no promotion, giving Liverpool the title, denying them and a whole host of other considerations on the table.

Whatever the outcome, Premier League rules state a vote must take place for any changes to the legislation to be implemented.

Rules state: “Clubs have the opportunity to propose new rules or amendments at the Shareholder meeting. Each Member Club is entitled to one vote and all rule changes and major commercial contracts require the support of at least a two-thirds vote, or 14 clubs, to be agreed."

While Liverpool’s title win was hypothetically just one win away, positions elsewhere in the division were far less certain.

At this stage Norwich City, Aston Villa and AFC Bournemouth occupy the relegation spots at the bottom of the Premier League, but Watford and West Ham are level on points with Brighton & Hove Albion just two points ahead of that.

The Champions League spots are also still to be decided.
