The goalkeeper left the club before the Premier League restarted in the summer. Elliot, signed from Charlton Athletic in 2011, had made 68 first-team appearances for the club over a nine-year career at St James’s Park.

The 34-year-old has trained this week with National League North club Gateshead, managed by his former Newcastle team-mate Mike Williamson.

“Been great to be back on the grass this week,” tweeted Elliot. “Big thanks to everyone @GatesheadFC, the gaffer Iron Mike, Buster – and all the lads for letting me join in. Top lads. Looking forward to getting stronger.”

Elliot had been frozen out by Rafa Benitez, Steve Bruce’s managerial predecessor at United, the season before last. The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper was brought back into the fold by Bruce last year, but he didn’t make a competitive appearance for the club last season.
