However, Hodgson acknowledged that the visitors’ 2-0 win at Selhurst Park wasn’t just down to the goalkeeper, who made important saves in each half.

Newcastle showed a doggedness and determination over the 90 minutes which had been lacking in the club’s two previous games, and Steve Bruce’s side won the Premier League game thanks to the link-up play of goalscorers Callum Wilson and Joelinton late in the game.

"All defeats hurt, and this one did – as we didn't play well,” said Hodgson, Palace’s manager. “I didn't think we were going to lose. I didn't think we would win it either. So to lose it is a bitter blow. Congratulations to Newcastle on winning it.

"I would credit the whole Newcastle team. The keeper played his part, but I think it’s too simplistic to say we didn't win because of their goalkeeper. We didn't create enough."
