The midfielder joined the club as a free agent this summer after leaving Burnley, tonight’s St James’s Park opponents. Dyche and Burnley were unhappy to see the 28-year-old leave as a free agent.

"It was a situation I felt could have been avoided,” said Burnley manager Dyche. “He’s a good player, fantastic lad and a fantastic professional. I certainly wish him well beyond us. I enjoyed him as a fella on and off the pitch.

“We played him all over the place. He had question marks from fans, but sometimes unfair, because we played him in all different positions.”

On United manager Steve Bruce, Dyche added: “His teams are always in good shape, and (have a) good tactical understanding, so I expect it to be a tough game. It’,s never an easy place to go fans or no fans. Never an easy task to play against Bruce's team.”
