And that need has only increased with Dwight Gayle limping out of United’s first pre-season game with a knee injury. Andy Carroll is back to goalscoring ways in black and white – and that can only be a good thing – but can he be relied upon having netted ZERO in the top flight last season?
5. Josh King - Bournemouth
Another one from the Bournemouth fire sale basket. King almost rejoined Manchester United in January, but for the move to fall down. Rafa Benitez liked the player and so do the United scouting team. But, should he become available, you'd expect Norway international King to not be short of suitors with half of the Premier League and teams on the continent already waiting with baited breath for his next move. 6. Bertrand Traore - Lyon
A former Chelsea forward who can play right across the frontline. Traore is a player United's scouting team are very keen on and rumours have been circling about the Magpies striking a deal with the Burkina Faso and Lyon man since early in the summer. Could be allowed to leave but is unlikely to be in the bargain basement category, which United seem to be shopping in. Photo: JEAN-PHILIPPE KSIAZEK
7. Luka Jovic - Real Madrid
This is a left-field one, but is definitely a striker the Magpies' scouting team have been monitoring. And given his Santiago Bernabeu struggles, may be allowed to leave on loan. Real Madrid are unlikely to cut their losses just yet. A striker who does not necessarily operate best as a lone striker, so if signed would ideally want to play with another frontman.
