The documents claim the halting of the £300million deal to buy United – brokered between owner Mike Ashley and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, PCP Capital Partners and Reuben Brothers – was against UK anti-competition law.

And Newcastle United fans were quick to react to the latest takeover bombshell on social media – simply scroll down to see what YOU said on Twitter…

@Muzzdobetter: “It’s from a fans group, not NUFC and Ashley, so looks like grandstanding to me.”

@James_Harker: “Since this has come from a couple of fans, would this have had to get the green light from MA and Co as, at the end of the day, it’s his business?”

@Abetee: “Means this thing is still 50/50. The problem we face now is time.”

@5yntax_Err0r: “The more pressure that can be applied to the Premier League the better, the time will come when they will have to decide if they really want to go to court. The block and frustrate plan has failed and they would be well advised to accept defeat and approve the #nufc takeover.”

@peter2828: “Would have been more confident if the papers were handed over by Mike Ashley & De Marco but it’s still good to see.”

@oldheatonian: “Analysed this for a couple of hours and can see how this is a very interesting move. I say get behind it.”

@busterforever: “Think we need to wait to see how this all pans out, Got a bit excited when I first saw it thinking this was Ashley's QC's. But its the first shot so let’s see if it hits any targets.”

@ChrisSteele90: “Something is definitely going on behind the scenes. Far too many coincidences.”

@WhoIsJohnMill: “It's not even being led by the consortium. Nothing to see here.”
