Ings hurt his knee in a 4-3 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park yesterday. However, an initial scan has indicated that the striker has avoided a serious injury, according to the club, which will entertain Steve Bruce’s side on Friday night.

A club statement read: “Danny Ings has undergone a scan on his knee, the initial results of which are favourable ahead of further assessment over the coming days. After having the scan on Sunday night, the club conducted a further assessment of Ings this morning, and will continue to monitor him throughout the week.”

Ings has previously suffered two serious knee injuries which led to long spells on the sidelines.

Meanwhile, United winger Allan Saint-Maximin was forced off against Everton yesterday with a dead leg. Head coach Bruce said: “We expect him to make a recovery.”
