Like the Toffees, the Saints have enjoyed a bright start to the season, and are currently fifth in the Premier League table – just three points behind leaders Liverpool.

For their part, the Magpies managed to get a decent amount of points on the board early, and a win on their trip to the south coast would see them leapfrog their hosts in the table.

The Magpies’ only doubt going into Sunday’s game against Everton was Jamaal Lascelles, and after the defender came through that match unscathed, Steve Bruce should have no new injury concerns ahead of his side’s trip to the South Coast.

Martin Dubravka and Matt Ritchie remain sidelined.

Southampton talisman Danny Ings suffered a knee injury during the thrilling 4-3 win over Aston Villa last weekend, and while that complaint is not as serious as first feared, it is unlikely that he will feature on Friday.

Who is the referee for Southampton vs Newcastle United?

The man in the middle at St. Mary’s on Friday will be Peter Bankes. The official has taken charge of two Premier League games so far this season, handing out seven yellow cards and no reds.

Bankes will be assisted by Neil Davies and James Mainwaring, while his fourth official will be David Coote.

What is the form?

Newcastle have recorded two wins, two draws, and a loss in their last five matches, while Southampton have registered four wins and a draw.

Both sides did win in their last outing, however, with the Magpies running out 2-1 winners against Everton, and the Saints holding on for a dramatic 4-3 win over Aston Villa.

Based on their last five Premier League matches alone, Southampton actually top the form table, while Newcastle sitting ninth, level on points with Manchester City and West Ham.
