Newcastle United secured a narrow 1-0 Carabao Cup semi-final first leg win at Southampton - here are the player ratings from the match
Newcastle had a goal ruled out from Joelinton for handbal in the first half. The Brazilian then missed a sitter early in the second half as the game remained goalless.
But it would prove to be third time lucky for Joelinton as he turned the ball in from close range following some great work down the right from Alexander Isak to set up the goal.
A minute later Southampton thought they’d equalised as former Magpies striker Adam Armstrong bundled the ball into the net only for it to be ruled out for handball following a VAR check.
Southampton were reduced to 10 men late on as Duje Caleta-Car was shown a second yellow card.

5. Dan Burn - 5
Poor in possession at times but made a few good challenges and interceptions. Got away with one with Southampton’s disallowed goal.

6. Bruno Guimaraes - 6
A little bit sloppy in possession for his high standards. Looked a bit laboured at times but everything went through him. Booked.

7. Sean Longstaff - 6
An industrious display and won the ball back at key moments. Could have offered more conviction in and around the penalty area.

8. Joe Willock - 5
Got into some good areas but lacked quality with his finishing and final ball. Badly skied two good chances but did create Newcastle’s disallowed goal.
