Steve Bruce explains Andy Carroll decision at Newcastle United

Steve Bruce has revealed why Callum Wilson – and not Andy Carroll – took Newcastle United’s penalty.

Bruce’s side drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur yesterday thanks to a controversial late penalty, which was scored by £15million signing Wilson.

Eric Dier was penalised for handling an Andy Carroll header, and the striker, looking for the first goal of his second spell at the club, took the ball, but Bruce insisted that Wilson take the injury-time spot kick.

“I don’t think Andy’s missed a penalty, so he’s told me afterwards, but I just can’t remember the last time he scored one,” said United’s head coach.

"Callum’s been a penalty taker in the Premier League up until now, so that was my thought process on it. It was great for Andy to step forward and show the courage that he wanted to take it, but, I think, Callum (was the right choice given) the way he’s been taking them over the last 12 months.”
