Bruce was without Jonjo Shelvey and Miguel Almiron, as well as longer-term casualties Allan Saint-Maximin and Matt Ritchie, for yesterday’s scrappy 1-0 defeat to Burnley. Saint-Maximin and Almiron were missed at Turf Moor, where Chris Wood scored from a disputed corner.

Bruce, United’s head coach, won’t take any risks when he selects his team for next Saturday’s Premier League game against Crystal Palace.

Asked if he would have any players back, Bruce said: “We really don’t know. We hope they’re not too serious.

“It would have been a huge risk to have played them – we couldn’t afford to do that. We hope they’re there or thereabouts for the weekend, but we’ll see. There are a few bumps and bruises coming out of the game, but you’d expect that.”
