Sean and Matty Longstaff are due new contracts at the club, while there have also been discussions with Matt Ritchie and Isaac Hayden, whose deals expire in 2021.

Jonjo Shelvey – who scored the club’s equaliser against Manchester City last weekend – is also playing for a new deal at St James’s Park, with his contract set to expire in 18 months. Speaking last week, the midfielder said: "I’m playing for a new contract now. I want to stay here, and hopefully a contract will be sorted.”

Steve Bruce, United's head coach, isn't directly involved in the talks.

Asked for an update, Bruce said: “You don’t get involved in those things these days. We have people dealing with these things. I believe they are still ongoing. A contract’s got to be right for both parties.”
