Longstaff, his midfield team-mate, had also suffered a hamstring injury in the midweek win over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, and Bruce is unsure whether they will play again this season. The injuries followed a demanding run of games.

“Arguably, our two fittest players, Sean Longstaff and Isaac, have both nicked hamstrings, and we don’t think it’s anything serious, but when you do that, it’s probably two or three weeks, which probably rules the two of them out (of the remaining games),” said head coach Bruce.

Newcastle twice came from behind to claim the point. Reflecting on the game, Bruce said: "I was delighted the way we have come back twice.

“We didn't start well, and we knew they would be a threat from set-pieces. We have managed to dig deep and find a reaction, which doesn't surprise me with the way the players are. The (unbeaten) run continues and deservedly so.

"The draw was probably a fair result. West Ham were a very well-organised team, and you wouldn’t expect anything different from David Moyes.

“They’re fighting for their lives, so their defensive organisation set them up well, and they’re a big powerful side. Some of the stuff we have played, I was pleased with.”

Newcastle, 12th in the Premier League with five games to play, take on Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.
