There were calls from fans for Bruce to be sacked after last night’s 1-0 defeat to Brentford.

Bruce pledged to fight on at the club – and said: “The supporters are entitled to their opinion – I can’t let that affect myself. I understand the disappointment. I have to accept what’s coming my way, and accept that its part and parcel of being the manager of Newcastle and accept the criticism, which is fully justified.”

Bruce’s future is in the hands of Mike Ashley, and United's owner remains supportive of the 59-year-old, who guided the club to a 13th-placed finish last season.

The club is in 12th place with 18 points ahead of the Boxing Day game away to Manchester City, and a managerial change is not understood to be on the agenda. However, Ashley’s position could change if things deteriorate further at the club.
