Bruce was asked about transfers after last night's goalless draw against Brighton and Hove Albion. The club has already signed goalkeeper Mark Gillespie on a free transfer, and it has also been linked with Sheffield United’s Hebburn-born defender Chris Basham.

However, head coach Bruce – who has handed striker Andy Carroll a new one-year deal – is also keen to strengthen his attacking options in the belief that £40million signing Joelinton is better in the wide areas.

“I think we need four or five players to add to the squad of players we’ve got, so, we’ll go to work on that,” said Bruce.

“I’ve always said with Joe, I think he’s better playing to a side, that suits him, so it’s quite possible that a centre-forward could be on the list, yeah.”
