The Newcastle United striker sat out the club’s 2-0 Boxing Day defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Bruce left Wilson on the bench because of a “nasty” ankle knock, but the summer signing could return against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Callum Wilson took a knock,” said United's head coach. “That would have been his fifth game in something like 12 days, so I didn’t want to risk him on that. He’s got a nasty knock to his ankle. Look, he could have played. I’m sure he wanted to play, but we’ve got to try and look after him as best we can. I didn’t think tonight was right for him.”

Wilson has scored eight Premier League goals, four of them from the penalty spot, since joining from Bournemouth in a £20million deal.
