Gayle, sidelined since July with a knee injury, has made three substitute’s appearances over the past week.

And the striker is in Steve Bruce’s thoughts ahead of Tuesday night’s quarter-final at the Brentford Community Stadium after coming off the bench in last night’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Fulham.

“I’ve just got to make sure that he’s right, because he got injured back in July, and we’re just making sure that he’s right, of course,” said United's head coach. “He’s had a good week in terms of coming on.

"He’s made us better, that’s for sure. He’s in our thoughts, of course he is. He did really well the back end of last year, but I’ve just got to make sure he’s right, physically-wise. He’s had a good week in that respect.”
