Steve Bruce is preparing his team for Sunday’s home game against Everton, and Sean and Matty – who have recovered from illness and injury respectively – are in his thoughts.

Sean – who turned 23 today – was an unused substitute for Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers after recovering from a bout of tonsillitis, while Matty, 20, has played two Under-23 games since overcoming a thigh injury.

The siblings, both midfielders, will give United “something a bit different”, according to Steve Bruce.

“We need both to stay well,” said United’s head coach, who is without the injured Jonjo Shelvey. “Sean, unfortunately, has had a horrible, horrible bout (of tonsillitis). We had to send him away from the group. He’s had awful tonsillitis. The Longstaffs, of course, will give us something a bit different. I have to get them right. We have to make sure they’re both OK.”
