Bruce has been speaking about Mitrovic ahead of his return to St James's Park tomorrow with Fulham.

The striker was sold by Rafa Benitez two years ago in a £22million deal after he had a successful half-season loan at Craven Cottage. Benitez had felt that Mitrovic, signed from Anderleht in 2015 during Steve McClaren’s time in charge, wasn’t right for his team, and also questioned the Serbia international’s temperament.

Bruce, however, is a big admirer of Mitrovic, who has scored two Premier League goals for Scott Parker’s side so far this season.

"I would have loved the opportunity to work with him,” said United's head coach. "He was great up here, and you can understand why he's a cult hero. He's different. Big, tough, strong, fiercely competitive, has a bit of an edge to him, a bit like the North East."
