Steve Bruce on Newcastle United's 'gloomy' Premier League predicament

Steve Bruce has admitted that Newcastle United face a “gloomy” predicament – but he’s confident of a brighter end to the season.

The club is 17th in the Premier League following Sunday night’s 3-1 defeat to Manchester United. Third-bottom Fulham have cut the gap between themselves and Newcastle to three points over the past fortnight – and fans fear that the club is going to get sucked into the drop zone.

However, Bruce, preparing his team for Saturday's home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, retains the backing of owner Mike Ashley.

Asked about the club’s position, United’s head coach said: “I agree with you, it’s gloomy (the club’s league position), but I was pleased with the performance, especially in the first hour.

"If we keep performing like that … I know I’ve said that for a little bit, but you’ve got to turn those performances into results. We’re quietly confident that we’ll get the results we need.”
