Steve Bruce pranks Manchester City star - and claims he's signing for Newcastle United!

Of all the names mentioned in the same breath as Newcastle United post-Saudi takeover, Kevin de Bruyne is not one that’s come up in conversation.

But Steve Bruce interrupted the Belgian’s Man City club interview to claim he is signing for the Magpies, having watched the 29-year-old orchestrate FA Cup progress for Pep Guardiola & Co at St James’s Park.

Interjecting De Bruyne’s time in front of the camera, Bruce joked: “He’s going to stay here – he’s going to come here.

“It’s an exclusive out of Newcastle tonight that he’s had enough of Manchester City and he’s going to play for Newcastle.”

He added: “Well played, hope you’re well.”

Back in reality, Bruce has confirmed Motherwell goalkeeper Mark Gillespie has signed for United on a free contract.

The Geordie, who was let go by United at 16, comes in as Newcastle’s third choice keeper, behind Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow.
