Newcastle United are due to play Sheffield United at St James’s Park tomorrow, but the league is meeting today to discuss what to do against the backdrop of the coronavirus outbreak. A postponement is reportedly “likely”.

“For me, in my opinion, you suspend and wait until you get the all-clear,” said head coach Bruce. “I think that’s the only viable solution. I don’t think there’s any alternative. I really can’t see the point of playing behind closed doors.”

It was revealed last night that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had contracted Covid-19. Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi has also tested positive. Bruce said: “Up to yesterday, we were pretty convinced it was going ahead. I can’t see any alternative but to suspend it. It’s a difficult situation for all.”

No Newcastle players have shown symptoms for the virus.
