Barlaser – who spent last season on loan at Rotherham United – started last night’s 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Blackburn Rovers at St James’s Park.

The 23-year-old played alongside Sean Longstaff in midfield on a difficult night for Bruce’s team, who were on the back foot for much of the second-round tie.

“He did OK,” said Bruce, who could loan Barlaser out again this season. “It was a big night for him. It would have been nice if we’d had more possession. The kid did OK. I’m sure he’ll have enjoyed the experience even though it would have been hard going at times.”

Barlaser’s previous United appearance had come in a defeat to Nottingham Forest at St James’s Park in the same competition in August 2017. He signed a new contract at the club this summer.
