The midfielder, out of contract at the end of the season, scored in yesterday’s disappointing 4-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Longstaff also scored in the corresponding fixture at St James’s Park in October after being given his first Premier League start by Steve Bruce.

The club has been discussing new deals with the 19-year-old and his elder brother Sean – who broke into the first-team squad last season – for months.

Matty Longstaff, right, celebrates his goal.

And head coach Bruce said: “That's for people to sort out. I'd like to (see him sign a new deal), of course. He's played four times now – and scored twice against Man United! The kid’s got a bright future. He wants to do well, and I hope he succeeds."
