The winger was left out of Steve Bruce’s starting XI at the weekend against Burnley at St James’s Park after complaining of a sore hamstring last week. Saint-Maximin came off the bench late in the Premier League fixture, which ended goalless.
And Saint-Maximin – who has been troubled by hamstring problems this season – was today being assessed ahead of tomorrow night’s tie at The Hawthorns, where Newcastle will be backed by more than 5,000 fans.
“We’ve got one or two little issues – Allan’s the biggest concern,” said Bruce. “He was sore yesterday in his back and hamstring area.”
Otherwise, Bruce’s players came the Burnley came unscathed, though Andy Carroll (hip) remains sidelined. United’s head coach said: “Everyone else seems to be OK from the weekend, although Andy’s not ready.”
