Lejeune was at fault for two of Leicester City’s goals in Newcastle United’s 3-0 defeat at St James’s Park yesterday.

The defender had started three Premier League games in 11 days after making his comeback from a serious knee injury.

Bruce, United's head coach, had wanted to give Lejeune a break, but he was hamstrung by injuries to Paul Dummett and Ciaran Clark.

“In an ideal world I would have loved Dummett, Clark or one of those defenders to be available, and unfortunately they weren’t,” said Bruce, who lost five players to injury against Leicester.

“To ask him to play four games in 10 days is too much. He’ll be OK physically, and he did very well up to then. He gave the ball away twice in poor areas, and we have been punished.”
