Newcastle United's head coach must soon name a 25-man Premier League squad – and he has a clutch of players vying for the final few places.

With Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth assured of places in the squad, DeAndre Yedlin is among those players facing uncertain futures at St James’s Park.

“I think the most difficult job I’ve got, of course, is keeping everybody happy,” said Bruce, who will now keep Jacob Murphy on Tyneside. “Ultimately, we have to make a decision on 22 players over the next two or three weeks. So there’s a difficult situation."

Linked with Besiktas, Yedlin well leave the club before the transfer window closes on October 5.

The 27-year-old, signed from Tottenham Hotpur in 2016, started last night’s 7-0 Carabao Cup win over Morecambe out of position at left-back – and he could again play in next week’s fourth-round tie against Newport County.

Beyond that, Yedlin, keen to play week in, week out, could be playing for another team.

“I’m sure DeAndre wants to play more regularly,” said Bruce. “We have got three recognised right-backs at the club, which is not really that healthy to be honest.

“However, DeAndre’s somebody I like. I like him as a pro, as a player. We’ll see what happens. There’s been a lot of speculation around him. I’ve got no problem with DeAndre hanging around, no problem at all. But he’s like a lot when they’re not playing. They want to play, which I understand.”
