Steve Bruce has revealed what Carlo Ancelotti told him after Newcastle United’s dramatic comeback at Goodison Park.

Ancelotti, Everton’s manager, spoke to Bruce at the final whistle – and reminded him that he was AC Milan manager in 2005 when Liverpool came from three goals down in that year’s Champions League final.

Asked what he said to Ancelotti, United head coach Bruce said: “I didn’t apologise! He shrugged his shoulders. As he said to me, he was 3-0 up in a European Cup final. He’s just reminded me. It’s football. It can happen.”

Ancelotti said: “I think there are things in football that are unpredictable. We played really well and deserved to win but have to accept the result.
