Shelvey scored in tonight's 2-0 win over Sheffield United, who were furious that the midfielder’s strike stood.

The linesman flagged after Andy Carroll flicked on a ball forward for Shelvey. The home team stopped even though there was no whistle from referee Stuart Attwell, and Shelvey carried on upfield, urged on by Newcastle’s coaching staff, and scored past a static Dean Henderson.

Head coach Bruce said: "I have to say well done to the ref for not blowing his whistle – and Jonjo for carrying on. That's been the directive, if you don't hear the whistle carry on. The two Steves (Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence) next to me were screaming for him to go on and finish it."

Allan Saint-Maximin opened the scoring with his first goal for Newcastle. The result moved the club up to 11th in the Premier League.
