The winger, fielded up front alongside Callum Wilson, had gone down after a first-half collision with a visiting player, but was able to continue without treatment. Saint-Maximin re-emerged for the second half, but eventually left the field in the 74th minute, and Fraser set up a second goal for Wilson late in the behind-closed-doors Premier League game.

Asked about Saint-Maximin’s injury, head coach Steve Bruce said: "He’s took a knock, but we expect him to be OK. Thankfully it’s just a dead leg, so it's a kick. We expect him to make a recovery.”

Newcastle, with 11 points from seven games, ended the weekend in 11th place, level on points with 10th-placed Manchester City. United take on Southampton at the St Mary’s Stadium on Friday night.
