Steve Bruce reveals why Newcastle United's Miguel Almiron returned late from international duty

Almiron arrived back on Tyneside on Thursday night despite being suspended for Tuesday night’s game against Bolivia.

Steve Bruce – who was critical of Almiron's agent Daniel Campos yesterday – has had to quickly assess the midfielder’s fitness ahead of this afternoon’s Premier League home game against Chelsea.

“Typical Almiron, he wanted to stay – even though he couldn’t play,” said United’s head coach.

“Then, of course, there was the problem with flights. We would have liked him 24 hours earlier, but, unfortunately, that wasn’t possible with the number of flights around the world. He was then Covid tested, like all the players are.”

Campos gave an explosive interview on a Paraguayan radio station this week. He claimed that Almiron would have left United already had it not been for the coronavirus pandemic, and also suggested that the 26-year-old would leave Newcastle next year.

Bruce said: “I’d be outraged if my agent came out with those ridiculous comments. Talk about amateurish and a lack of respect.

"We all know there are some very good agents out there, but a good one would never put his client in that situation. This club has done unbelievable things for Almiron. And the supporters, the way they have been towards him and the patience they have shown towards him, have been unbelievable too.

“To start with, I had a chuckle at them as if to say ‘oh my god, they’re that ridiculous – am I really reading this?’. It’s just unbelievable.

“I’ve said it many times. Miguel Almiron’s one of the best professional footballers I’ve had the pleasure to manage. He is an absolute delight.

"I’ve had no problem. Now, if he comes and knocks on the door and speaks, then I’ll listen and treat it with the respect it deserves. But a two-bob agent who’s trying to make a few quid? I’m sorry, but he’s bang out of order.

“He wants to try and disturb him to make a few bob for himself. You wouldn’t get a top agent behaving like that.”
