Bruce has tasked the Paraguayan international, a £21million buy from Atlanta United in the January window, with adding to his Magpies tally having eventually broken his duck.

“I was just delighted for the lad and I think everyone who supports Newcastle would say the same," Bruce said of Almiron’s weekend striker.

“Every time he gets it around the box he’s dangerous. It’s great for him. He’s a great pro. He lights up the place every day with the way he works. Let’s hope it’s the start of a few now.

“When you work with him every day you understand what he is. We played him deeper in more of a midfield role on Saturday and he scored. I was delighted for him, I think all of us who support Newcastle were – he’s been a pleasure to work with.”
