Steve Bruce loaned the defender to Alaves last summer after two injury-hit seasons at St James’s Park.

And Bruce is happy for Lejeune – who was reunited with former Newcastle striker Joselu in Spain – to see out the season at the La Liga club.

Asked if the 29-year-old could be recalled in this month’s transfer window, United’s head coach said: “No. The purpose of it was to go and play for the season.

"He’s playing week in and week out so I’m led to believe. Of course we keep an update on him. It would be nice for Shola (Ameobi), our loan manager, to go and see him, but with the problems (he can’t). The feedback (is that) he’s doing OK. He’s fit, he’s healthy, which is the important thing. I think it’s important that the kid still plays the games.”
