The winger missed the club’s Boxing Day defeat to Manchester City with a groin injury – and he will not be back for Liverpool’s visit to St James’s Park tomorrow night. The 26-year-old, signed as a free agent in the summer following the expiry of his Bournemouth contract, had only just returned from a hamstring problem.

Fraser – who hadn’t played for six months when he joined Newcastle – suffered the injury in last week’s Carabao Cup defeat to Championship club Brentford.

Meanwhile, winger Saint-Maximin – who has been recovering from Covid-19 with family in France – is weeks away from a playing return.

The 23-year-old winger – who signed a new long-term deal at United in October – was laid low by Covid-19 along with a number of his team-mates, including Fabian Schar. The defender made his comeback against City at the Etihad Stadium.
