The Newcastle United striker laboured up front in last night’s 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Blackburn Rovers at St James’s Park, where Ryan Fraser was on target on his debut.

And No.9 Joelinton, signed last year from Hoffenheim for £40million, looked dejected when he trudged off the field to be replaced by winger Allan Saint-Maximin, who needed treatment late in the second-round tie.

“Joe has always, always worked his socks off, and given the club the best he can,” said head coach Bruce. “He’s got to dust himself down and get on with the challenge in front of him. He’s big enough to take it. He had a frustrating night, it’s far to say. But he’ll keep working away, and I’m sure he’ll be OK.”

Newcastle will face League Two club Morecambe in the next round of the competition.
