The striker – who came to prominence in the 2018/19 season last after a blistering run of form at Under-23 level – scored five goals on loan at the Dutch Eerste Divisie club this season.

Sorensen, under contract at Newcastle for another season, took to Instagram after the club was beaten in the play-offs by NEC Nijmegen after finishing fourth in the table.

"Just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone involved at @almerecityfc for taking such good care of me over the past season," said the 21-year-old. “I wish everyone involved with the club all the very best for the future. Unfortunately, the season didn’t end as we wished, but I’m sure this club will do good things in the future.”

Sorenzsen – who has represented Denmark at Under-21 level – made his senior United debut in the summer of 2019.
